International Wine Report

"The 2023 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of blackberries and ripe cherry, laced with notes of graphite, crushed stones, violets, and faint hints of wild herbs. On the palate, it shows both depth and composure, delivering a full-bodied impression supported by fine, integrated tannins. Waves of dark and red fruit are joined by subtle mineral accents and a touch of spice, resulting in a balanced profile. The finish is long and precise, marked by a sense of freshness that highlights its structure and aging potential. While already showing beautifully, it is poised to gain additional nuance and complexity with time in bottle."

The mountain character of our 2023 Mount Veeder is revealed with open aromas of pine, black currant, olive, and forest floor. The seamless richness on the palate is shaped by perfectly polished tannin that resolves in an opulent finish with a hint of minerality. Vineyard notes

Mount Veeder AVA

Graces the rugged slopes of the southern stretches of the Mayacamas Mountains. Perched between 200 and 2,600 feet in elevation, the vineyards reside above the veil of fog.

Ancient Seabed Soils

Upward of five million years ago, ancient seabeds were thrust upward during the mountain's formation. Shallow, sedimentary soils are predominantly sandy loam.

Distinctive Delicacy

The combination of shallow soils and cooler temperatures leads to small berries with concentrated flavors and structure distinctive to Mount Veeder.

Wine Facts

Created by uplift from seismic activity and movement of tectonic plates some 12 million years ago, Mount Veeder is derived from ancient sea beds. These sedimentary soils are infused with the decayed remnants of the forests native to the area, which leads to a distinctively dark berry and exotic, wild mountain character. Because of the rugged, steep terrain of this mountain appellation, the yields are inherently miniscule, with tiny berries bursting with concentrated and densely tannic structures.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm temperatures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh, full of flavor, with great balance and fruit density.
