Medium ruby-purple, the nose of the 2019 Somersault Zinfandel opens to a fresh perfume of crushed raspberry and red plum fruits, interwoven with savory layers of cracked pepper and tarragon. A firm, consistent tannin structure frames the rich fruit with a wound up energy that will relax beautifully over the years. A sensation of salinity follows, leading to a refreshingly austere finish.

Planted over 100 years ago, Pacini vineyard is perched on the wild slopes of Mayacamas Mountain Range majestically overlooking Ukiah to the west. A true heritage vineyard, 2018 marks the year that the great-grandson bought the vineyard back into the family. With great care and vision the site is being rehabilitated in concert with the natural habitat by employing true dry-farming, sustainable practices, and sheep as natural (and very cute) mowers. The wine made from these centenarian vines presents a powerful yet elegant side of Zinfandel. May they continue to be fruitful for another century to come!

Vintage Notes

The 2019 vintage began with a wet spring bringing three inches of rain in May. In response to the late rains our vineyards received diligent attention to control vigorous vine growth. A long Indian summer followed with mild weather, allowing the fruit to ripen at slow, even place. The long picking windows bore fruit with beautiful freshness at optimal ripeness. The resulting wines are exceptionally elegant.
